Practice for the fall season has begun. We are practicing 7–9 PM at Rockledge Park, on Cogswell Street just north of Barton in Rockledge. Come out, and help make this season even better than the last.

Bowl for Kids' Sake
Brian Laughlin is rounding up several ruggers for Bowl for Kids' Sake, a charity bowling event to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. The event will be held September 13 and 14 at Brunswick Harbour Lanes in Melbourne. This is a great way for the Red Eyes to get some exposure in the community — without having to dress up. Bowling, drinking, wearing ugly shoes, helping kids. What more could you ask for from a charity event?
Send an email to the list to let people know you're interested. Even better, volunteer to be a team captain and sign up your team. The more people there are, the more fun we'll have.

Bahamas Trip Details
Here are the details for the 2003 Old Red Eye Bahamas Trip. Flights are out of Melbourne International to Freeport.
The Red Eyes held a Club Meeting on Tuesday, July 1, at Paddy O'Dell's. Club President Corkey Newman opened the meeting by presenting awards to players who were not at the end-of-year banquet in May: Tim Madigan received Most Improved Player, and Andy Pappas received the IronMan (IronHead?) award.
The following committees were proposed and approved by all in attendance.
- Fund Devlopment Committee
The Fund Development Committee shall be responsible for devloping a year-round funding plan for the club, based on the annual budget that is approved at the December AGM. This plan should include the 2 existing golf tournaments (Spring and Fall), club sponsors, and players' dues. It should also include one or two other special fundraising events that also increase community awareness about the club and the sport of rugby. Various sponsorship levels should be set, along with the benefits to the company or individual. Several potential sponsors should be identified and approached. The committee will also be responsible for starting the 501(c)(3) incorporation process.
This committee should consist of 4–6 persons and meet at least 4 times a year. Committees for specific fundraising events will be a subset of this committee and will meet as needed.
Scotty McLachlan will chair the Fund Development Committee. Corkey Newman, Tyrone Mulreany, Marty Ryan, Rob Saunderson, Brian Laughlin, and Scott Bissett volunteered to serve on the committe.
- Player Development Committee
The Player Development Committee shall be responsible for developing the best players that the club can put on the pitch and making sure that all positions are filled with adequately skilled players. This involves improving the performance of new players by way of providing coaching material to them when they first come out to practice and assigning someone to work with them on basic skills before and/or after practices. It also involves developing a plan to improve the fitness, skills, and work ethics of all players by scheduling appropriate group activities, such as weight training (in or out of season) and alternative practice schedules.
This committee will be responsible for reviewing resumes and needs of potential skilled players who might want to relocate here to see if they fit a particular requirement that the club has, as well as arranging for any housing and/or employment requirements.
This committee will also be responsible for dividing the squad into 4 groups who, on a rotating basis, will be responsbile for each training session — taking the warm-up, warm-down, getting the equipment out before practice and putting it away afterward.
The Player Development Committee should consist of 4–6 persons and shall be chaired by the team captain. The committee should meet as needed but at least 4 times a year. Team Captain Ben Buchanan will chair this committee. Andy Pappas, Matt Henderson, Josh Gruner, and Chandler Wilson volunteered to serve on the committee
- Field Committee
The Field Committee shall be responsible for ensuring that the pitch is properly prepared and sufficient water is available on the sidelines no later than 1 hour before game time. This committee should consist of 4 persons who can assign duties to other players to assist them. This committee should meet prior to the spring and fall seasons and other times as needed. Tim Madigan will chair the Field Committee. Tom Buist and Trouper Green volunteered to serve on the committee.
For those who did not attend the meeting, all of the committees are still looking for one or two more members, so if you would like to help out with the administration of these ongoing activities, please don't hesitate to volunteer.
Other new issues
- Brian Laughlin will be hosting his 3rd Annual 4th of July Bash at Wickham Park. All ruggers and rugger huggers are invited (expected) to attend and enjoy.
- The club unanimously voted to let Tyrone give the Todd Miller 7's Trophy a good home in his bar.
- Corkey Newman proposed the idea of team workouts on Saturday mornings at a gym. Josh Gruner, Steve Williams, and Ray Campion will investigate team rates at some local gyms.
- The club's trip to the Bahamas is planned for Labor Day weekend. Further details will follow.
Marcie & Brian's 3rd Annual 4th of July Bash

- All Red Eyes (new and used)
It's that time of the year again. This years party will be bigger and better than the previous two. For those of you new to our bash, this is an outdoor picnic type party with lots of food and activities. Wickham park has sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, lakes for swimming (with lifeguards), horse stables, exercise tracks, an archery range, softball fields, and 2 disc golf courses.
As tradition holds, there will be a fried turkey cook-off. Feel free to marinate a turkey and bring it to the party, we'll cook it, scarf it down, and judge it versus the others.
We'll also have our traditional quoits tournament (don't ask, you'll see when you get there), grilled clams, and the infamous "ice princess".
Brevard Old Red Eyes Win Todd Miller 7's
The Brevard Old Red Eye Rugby Club sent 10 ruggers to the 12th annual Todd Miller 7's tournament held on June 14, 2003 at the UCF campus. There were a total of 32 teams with 7 women's teams attending this US Rugby South Qualifier. Originally intent on a fast and fun outing with the enjoyment of a few good hard tackles here and there, the Red Eyes earned respect by sweeping their opponents 4–0 en route to a first place finish in the Men's Open division.
2nd Annual Awards Banquet
For those of you who were unfortunate enough not to be able to attend the 2nd Annual Old Red Eye Awards Banquet on Friday June 6, there were a lot of close votes, and all of the winners were truly deserving. Here are the results:

Brevard Youth Rugby
We are excited to move forward with our Brevard Youth Rugby Club. This club of several youth teams in Brevard county will increase exposure to rugby by introducing to sport to kids and their parents. Ray Campion is heading the effort. We will be hosting the information on our site, in the Youth Rugby section.
